Because when my guy friend told me and some friends he got raped by a women when he was 12, a “friend” laughed at him and said he should be happy he got laid that young.
Because my 17 year old best friend’s parents let her 14 year old brother walk outside until 12pm, but she has to be home at 10.
Because a guy from my old school got raped by another guy, but because he is gay, they said it wasn’t considered rape.
Because a 19 year old lesbian got raped by a guy, and he didn’t go to prison because he said “he only tried to turn her straight so she would get accepted by her parents”
Because in some cultures, girls (and boys) still get thrown out of the family because some guy/girl sexually assaulted them.
Because they’re still teaching girls to walk faster at night instead of teaching guys they shouldn’t rape.
Because I have to explain why rape makes me angry.

So much this. Let’s evolve a society where rapists are never glossed over, never apologized for, and never defended. Let’s evolve a society where we don’t automatically assume a woman who claims rape is lying or she is somehow at fault for how she was dressed or not protesting loudly enough. Let’s evolve a society where women don’t have to be afraid to go out and live their lives. Let’s evolve a society where the idea of raping a woman is physically disgusting to men.

The trouble is that, for women, being “nice” often translates into putting up with things we should never put up with. How many times has some creep sat uncomfortably close to me on the bus and stared me down, yet I’m too afraid to just get up and move, lest I offend him?
We smile when we’re harassed on the street or hit on by jerks. We laugh at sexist jokes. We learn that when we have strong opinions, we’ll be called bitches and that if we get angry, we’ll be called hysterical. When we say what we want, we’re called pushy or aggressive.
Part of learning “ladylike” behavior is about learning to smile politely when someone is being crude. Femininity has long been attached to passivity and to being docile. Men fight, women giggle and fume silently.
